Port Isabel Lighthouse View this post on Instagram When I arrived, the Visitor Center said the light was closed for climbing. They were wrong (the volunteer opened up, a bit late, as I rounded the base to take photos). The Texas Parks Guide says the Port Isabel Light is a State Park. It is wrong (now run by the Texas Historical Commission, the park pass doesn't work for the $4 fee – a perfectly reasonable amount, so no biggie). • • It's only 72' high, but that's still 72' higher off the ground than I prefer to find myself 🤣 Inside, the 12' diameter is a tad claustrophobic, the stairs aren't solid, the staircase isn't continually attached to the walls, and there's an outside balcony. None of that fits my ideal lighthouse climbing scenario, but I ventured forth, and up! Didn't do a hug-the-lighthouse, 360° tour up top, but I did take a step outside. I also climbed the extra little ladder to the inside balcony. The lens isn't as bright as it once was (having been replaced with a lightbulb), but I've heard this is the only Texas light open to the public, so I'm happy I was able to experience it. • • #portisabel #lighthouse #historicalsite #openforclimbing #ifyoudare @texasparkswildlife @txhistcomm #southtexas #gulfcoast #traveltexas #homefortheholidays #floridabound A post shared by Sara | RV Travel in the US (@thelonglongroad) on Dec 14, 2019 at 6:40pm PST
