Palo Alto Battlefield NHP View this post on Instagram We backtracked to Palo Alto Battlefield. Having dropped in at the VC the day before, I thought the battlefield area would be a great spot to walk the dog and learn some history. I was right on one count. • • Have I mentioned that this region of Texas is flat? *Flat* flat. Really, really flat. And there aren't many trees. The ones they do have tend to be more shrub-like, less "shade havens". Thusly, not the best place to walk a black dog, under full sun, in mid-80 degree temps. He stuck with me to the overlook shelter, which wasn't far, but felt like an eternity. I fear we've been out of Florida too long…our blood is thickening, and out heat tolerance has dropped! • • The history here is fairly intense, as with many battlefields. The US troops faired better than the Mexican army, by a long ways, but there are dead from both sides buried on the grounds. Sobering to think of the past, especially I the peace and tranquility that reign today. • • @nationalparkservice @paloaltonps #battlefield #overlook #reflect #history #usmexicanwar #walkthedog #middaysun #maddogsandenglishmen #southtexas #traveltexas #homefortheholidays #floridabound A post shared by Sara | RV Travel in the US (@thelonglongroad) on Dec 15, 2019 at 5:45pm PST
