Crystal City – Popeye Statue View this post on Instagram Looking up Del Rio in my 1947 guide, I scanned the page and noticed Crystal City. "Self-advertised Spinach Capital of the World," huh? "Statue of Popeye on town square"? Oh, yeah! A check of Google Maps revealed it was *still there* 😁 Detour! Only a few miles this time, not too bad. • • Google indicated he would be standing in the (gloriously grassy) centre median of Crystal City's divided main road. Found him, and a lot of lovely Christmas decorations, too. He's not terribly easy to photograph, looking up, standing on a (tin can) pedestal, but I tried. If it hadn't been so sweltering hot, I may have attempted a sneaky drone shot. I've discovered winter temps in this area can swing dramatically in less than a day. This day, they swung *up*. We wandered along the median, Herbie enjoying what was underfoot, while I took note of the businesses – some new ones in old buildings, and some long-running ones recently closed. A mix. It was Sunday, making it hard to judge, but things looked more on the quiet side, for the most part. • • #popeye #spinach #capital #crystalcity #smalltown #bigclaim #texasagriculture #oldguidebook #christmasdecorations #festive #traveltexas #homefortheholidays #floridabound A post shared by Sara | RV Travel in the US (@thelonglongroad) on Dec 11, 2019 at 7:22am PST
